Duvet vs. Comforter

Like me, you must be confused about the difference between a duvet and a comforter. We often hear these two bedding types referred to as the same. To clear the air, let us define a duvet.

A duvet is composed of two parts – the cover and the insert. This insert is filled with wool, feather, or down.
On the other hand, a comforter is only one piece and has no cover. It works like a quilted blanket with synthetic fibre filling. The duvet has a cover, while the comforter has none.

Simple and Easy Way to Wash a Duvet

While we recommend professional cleaning from reliable upholstery cleaners for the duvet, you can check the label to see if there is an alternative option. If there is, you can DIY it. Just a reminder: washing your duvet is time-consuming, and you should have a big washer and dryer. You can go to the nearest laundromat if you don’t have them at home.

What You Need:

  1. Gentle detergent
  2. Front-load washer and dryer
  3. Clothesline or drying rack
  4. Tennis balls
  5. Clean socks

Step-by-Step Guide to Washing a Duvet

  1. Pre-Treat the Stains: To make your duvet look brand new after washing, you must pre-treat the stains. While doing so, you can also check it for small tears and rips.
  2. Put the Duvet in the Washer: Before putting your duvet in the washer, ensure you have removed the duvet cover. The duvet should freely move inside the washer. If yours cannot accommodate it, go to a laundromat to put it in a larger washer.
  3. Add the Tennis Balls: The next step is to put the tennis balls inside the clean socks. Secure the balls and ensure they do not come out of the socks. The tennis balls will add agitation to help remove the sweat, body oils, and dirt from the duvet.
  4. Add the Detergent: Use a gentle detergent. It should be about half the amount a normal wash would need. Pour it into the detergent dispenser and not directly on the washer. Do not use fabric softener or detergent.
  5. Run the Washer. Set the washer in a warm, gentle cycle and let it run. It would be better if your washer had an extra rinse and spin cycle. It will help clean the duvet.
  6. Remove from the Washer: When the cycle is completed, remove the duvet and check for soap residue. If there is any, rewash the duvet without soap and let it run through another rinse and spin cycle.
  7. Transfer the Duvet to the Dryer: If the washed duvet has no more soap residue, gently transfer it from the washer to the dryer. Set the dryer to a low, air-dry setting and let the drying process begin.
If you don’t have a dryer, hang the duvet on the clothesline or drying rack and leave it to dry.
  8. Check and Fluff: While the duvet is inside the dryer, check it periodically. It ensures that the fluff is distributed evenly. It may take approximately three hours to complete the drying process. You know when the duvet is dry. It will feel light, and the fill will be evenly spread. Just make sure that it is complete to prevent odour and mildew.
  9. Wash the Cover: Once the duvet is completely dry, remove it from the dryer. Wash the cover separately. When all the bedding has been washed and dried, you can return the duvet and make the bed.
